Queens Wharf Brisbane about to open

Exciting months ahead for Brisbane! After a number of years of construction, late August will see the opening of this world class entertainment precinct. In addition to the Star Casino there will be some 50 new cafes, bars and restaurants as well as a world class hotel and luxury retailers.

Not everything will open at once, but a number of these venues will certainly be throwing doors open to the Brisbane public and no doubt there will be plenty of interest and activity as we have watched this development evolve since 2017.

So what does this mean for the local hospitality industry?

Simply put, it means jobs and more jobs. In fact there has probably never been a better time in the history of Brisbane to be getting the chance to have to have such opportunities. The word from Star alone is they will be looking for up to 1500 employees with positions including – bar attendants, housekeeping, waitstaff, security, functions, hotel reception, concierge, room attendants, gaming attendants.

On top of this will be supervisors and management across the different departments to ensure the smooth running of this venue. The Star Brisbane will be managed by Rikesh Rajakulasingham, who has several decades of five star hotel management experience across the globe.

Brisbane hospitality opportunities continue to grow

Brisbane is already suffering from a skills shortage in hospitality and venues are willing more than ever to give new employees a start. Sure, experience is always preferred but more importantly employers are telling us here at ITS Bar Skills that the key criteria they look for in a potential team member are:

Personal presentation

Willingness to work nights and weekends

Communication skills

Enjoy working in a team environment

Employers are willing to fit around the needs of their people, that could be uni students with exams, people managing more than one job, family commitments as they arise.

In addition to that if they have already made the effort to obtain their Responsible Service of Alcohol certificate is a definite plus as this is mandatory when working with alcohol. Furthermore, if an applicant has made a commitment to the industry and done some basic practical training in areas such as bar practices and hygiene then this will often place that applicant ahead of the next person.
